Sowams Heritage Area Project Coordinator David Weed gave a half-hour presentation on the Sowams Heritage Area to members of the Rotary Club of Bristol, RI at the DeWolf Tavern on September 25, 2019. Bristol Rotary Club President Marty Roussel opened the meeting and introduced Dr. Weed following the Pledge of Allegiance, a number of favorite songs, and some announcements. Dr. Weed described the transition from Pokanoket Tribal domination of the land around Bristol to English control following King Philip’s War in 1675-76 that nearly eradicated the Native population. He also talked about the Royal Pokanoket Burial Ground at Burr’s Hill in Warren where numerous Dutch and English items were found among the 42 Pokanoket graves that were exhumed by Charles Carr in 1913.
