The Skulking Way of War: Eastern Woodlands Martial Context

The Wandering Warrior, Vincent Tseng, produced a 22-minute YouTube video describing the skulking way of war practiced by Eastern Woodland warriors. This method of warfare was responsible for the early victories over English colonists during the first months of King Philip’s War in 1675-76. Click here for the video posted on December 25, 2024.

(Above) Tseng begins by describing the use of bows and arrows before English guns became widely available. Much of what Tseng covers in his video is also contained in Patrick Malone’s book, The Skulking Way of War.

(Above) The early raids on colonists during the War succeeded largely because of the element of surprise and the ability of warriors to attack quickly and escape into the woods before colonists could respond.

Tseng describes the use of other weapons of war, including clubs and hatchets, against the English who relied primarily on their slow-to-load and inaccurate rifles.
