The history of Mt. Hope Farm featured in The Bay Magazine

Robert Isenberg wrote an article about the 275-year-old Mt. Hope Farm in Bristol, RI that appears in the November 2020 issue of The Bay Magazine. (Above photo by Savannah Barkley). Click here for the article.

Author isenberg begins by writing about the Pokanoket people who inhabited the entire Bristol peninsula and surrounding area then referred to as Sowams.

(Above) A large barn often used for weddings and events sits across from the farmhouse, and a cabin used for events and gatherings is situated about a mile away along the shoreline of Mt. Hope Bay. A weekly farmers’ market and  summer camp program are also offered at the Farm.

From the article: “It’s almost spiritual, when you go there,” said Susan Maloney, a Mount Hope board member, during our visit last year. “It’s very quiet. You can see how this would be sacred ground for the Pokanokets.”

Brown University retains ownership of the land just north of the Farm that contains the Seat of Metacom, but splendid views of the Bay are available to people who walk along the road at the Farm.
