In 1675, colonial settlements have replaced the New England wilderness, summarily threatening the lives – and lifestyle – of its Indigenous people. Some plan for a moment of reckoning; others plan to provoke. Rumors of war abound… The film, “Rumors of War” is an 18 minute proof of concept short film about the events leading up to King Philip’s War. The goal of the film is to one day make a feature film. The short film opens with a scene depicting the hanging of three Native men who have been accused by Plymouth Colony Governor Josiah Winslow (above, center) and Captain Samuel Mosely of murdering a Native praying Indian, John Sassamon, in January, 1675.

(Above) Metacom or King Philip is played by Annawon Weeden while Benjamin Church, played by Matthew McCurdey, is shown arguing against going to war against Philip.

After Metacom’s older brother is poisoned by the colonists, as depicted in the film, he makes the decision to go to war and begins by attacking colonial settlements in June of 1675.
