The Massasoit Spring in Warren, RI, has been in place prior to the founding of the town in the 1700s and has served as a reminder of its origins as Sowams, the homeland of the Massasoit Ousamequin. Today, however, it stands neglected on Baker Street, and is much overgrown, as in the above photo. Only the bronze plaque, placed in 1907, describes the origin of the Spring and the reason for its dedication.

In order to create and complete plans to refurbish the site, it was cleared of overgrown vegetation by members of the Warren Volunteer Gardeners, measurements were taken of the existing structure, and investigation was done of the underlying structure.

Evaluation, site appraisal and both preliminary and final plans for renovation will be undertaken by a licensed landscape architect chosen by and supervised by the Massasoit Historical Association who owns the site. Funds for the cost to complete the final project would then be sought based on the plans that are developed.

(Above) Neighbors and volunteers cleared the site on November 9, 2024, and preliminary sketches of possible site designs were submitted by Warren Architect Greg Spiess. The Historical Association will meet with members of the Pokanoket Tribe to develop final plans for the site that will include installation of benches, a cedar pole pergola and an interpretive marker.
