RI State Archives Search

Sowams project team member Dave Weed met with RI State Archives Director Kenneth Carlson in his search for land records related to the King’s Rock / Sachem Knoll site. The location was an important meeting place for members of the Pokanoket trive, including both Massasoit and his son, Metacomet or King Philip. It is also within sight of Margaret’s Rock where Roger Williams recovered from an illness after his walk from Salem, MA in 1636. It was along this route from the Myles Garrison that the English militia marched to Mt. Hope in what is now Bristol, RI, in search of King Philip at the stat of the war named for him. The rock, which was initially known as Raymond Rock, is clearly marked on an 1852 map.
