More than 30 readers showed up at a Book Club meeting on February 1, 2025 held at the Rogers Free Library in Bristol, RI in cooperation with the Bristol Historical and Preservation Society. The meeting was the first of three in a monthly series covering the 350th anniversary of King Philip’s War that broke out on June 20th, 1675 in Swansea and ended in August, 1676 with the death of Metacom (King Philip) in the Miery Swamp on Mount Hope in Bristol. Discussion Leaders Carol Gafford and Sarah Weed asked how many had read the book, Mayflower: A story of Courage, Community and War, before the Club session was announced, and only a few raised their hands. Participants noted how so much of the history that author Nathaniel Philbrick wrote about took place in locations that were familiar to Bristol residents. Sowams Heritage Area Coordinator Dave Weed, informed participants about a number of events that are scheduled to take place over the next two years to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the War that led to the loss of Native presence in New England following the War.
