
Dr. David Weed, Coordinator of the Sowams Heritage Area Project (center) responded to questions at the First Annual Meshanitcut Cultural Placemaking Confestival, a multi-day event based in Providence, Rhode Island on August 17-20, 2023.
Posing questions of Dr. Weed during a session on Indigenous Engagement was Jonny Skye of Skye Gallery , and also responding was Dr. Ronald Yonaguska Holloway (right) of the Federation of Aboriginal Nations of the Americas.
The Meshanticut Confestival is intended to achieve three specific goals:
- First, to serve as a tangible demonstration of the international interest in identifying and engaging Providence as an international cultural tourism destination.
- Secondly, to lay the foundation for the development of a nine day annual confestival based in Providence, Rhode Island that will serve as a platform for showcasing Providence’s cultural tourism infrastructure to the international cultural tourism sector.
- Third, to serve as the official launch for PCEI’s Real Revolution 2036 Campaign to begin planning and international relationship building in preparation for Providence’s 400 year anniversary in 2036.
