Members of the newly formed Rhode Island American Indian Heritage Commission met with Executive Vice President of Strategy & Community Investments Jessica David of the Rhode Island Foundation on February 10, 2020 to talk about ways they might collaborate to increase public awareness of the American Indian tribes in Rhode Island. Ideas expressed included speaking engagements, capacity building through a website, and establishment of a trust fund from which all Rhode Island Indian tribes could draw for future projects. Tribes that would be part of the Commission include the Mashapaug, Pokanoket, Nipmuc and Narraganset Tribes as well as other smaller tribes, Pictured left to right are Joann Ayuso of Movement Educators Outdoors, Jessica David of the Rhode Island Foundation, Providence Cultural Equity Initiative Executive Director Ray Two Hawks Watson, Pokanoket Nation Sagamore William Winds of Thunder Guy and Pokanoket Tribe Sachem Tracey Dancing Star Brown.
