Land acknowledgement mural depicts the tribes of Mount Hope in Providence

A colorful mural on the Billy Taylor Park overpass on Cypress Street in Providence depicts the story of the Narragansett and Pokanoket tribes who lived there long before the area was known as Mount Hope. Depicted on the mural are brothers Lee Braveheart and Harry the Hawk Edmonds, currently in their 80s, as well as Chief Edward Michade, also known as Chief Sunset, who led the Narragansett tribe in the ’20s. Artist Deborah Spears Moorehead worked from below with brushes on long poles to complete the mural in time for a neighborhood celebration held on September 14, 2019 celebrating the mural and the indigenous history of the Mount Hope Neighborhood. Click here for a 2 1/2 minute video by WPRI Channel 12 Television.
