17th Century Sowams Presented at the Rehoboth History Club

Sowams Heritage Area Coordinator David Weed (below, left) presented the 17th century history of the Sowams Heritage Area to members of the Rehoboth History Club at the Blanding Public Library in Rehoboth on December 17, 2019. Click here for a 65-minute video of the talk.

Dr. Weed outlined the major events between 1620 and 1676 that saw the land change from possession by the Pokanoket Tribe to possession by the English settlers, including the role that the Rehoboth settlement played in the transition.

One of the Club members looks over the map of the 17th century sites in Sowams before Club organizer Hank Coleman opens the program with a reference to Nathaniel Philbrick’s recent talk that was attended by ten members of the Club six days earlier.

The Club holds their meetings at the Blanding Public Library in Rehoboth, above, and sometimes includes snack such as the venison strips brought to a recent meeting by a Club member.
